From February 3 to 11, the annual Tapati Rapa Nui cultural festival will be held on Easter Island. After two and a half years of "tapu" - self-imposed closure due to the pandemic - since last August, the island has reopened and is ready to receive visitors again.
Before the pandemic, as many as 15 planes a week were arriving on the island, but now there are only four. For the island's beleaguered economy, the momentum is greatly slowed, but for the small island community and the ecosystem of this fragile islet, the reduced flow of visitors is a blessing.
