February 3 to 14, 2026, Rapa Nui will become the stage for its most important cultural celebration: the Tapati Rapa Nui. This festival, now in its 58th edition, is much more than a tourist event; it is the beating heart of the island, a vibrant tribute to the ancestral identity of the Rapa Nui people.
Vai Maŋaro: The Spirit of the Ancestral Water
The 2026 edition will be held under the theme of “Vai Maŋaro”, inspired by the ancestral hydraulic complex Ava Raŋa Uka a Toroke Hau. This theme pays tribute to the engineering and wisdom of the ancient Rapa Nui, who mastered water management in the isolation of the Pacific.

Two young people, Heilany Rapu Hito y Heremeta Teao Manutomatoma, compete as ukas (candidates) representing their communities. At the end of the festival, one of them will be crowned as ‘Ariki Vahine (Tapati Queen), becoming the face and symbol of the Rapa Nui culture throughout the year. Their families and communities support them in more than 40 cultural and artistic activities that include ancestral sports, dances, songs, handicrafts and local gastronomy.
A Festival of Living Traditions
The Tapati recovers the skills that were part of the daily life of the ancient Rapa Nui. The Haka Pei is one of the most impressive tests: participants slide down a steep hill on banana tree trunks, reaching impressive speeds in a test of bravery and dexterity. The Tau'a, The Rapa Nui triathlon, or Rapa Nui triathlon, combines swimming, running and sailing in Polynesian canoeing, demonstrating the endurance and ancestral skills of the competitors. Horse racing adds a spectacle of speed and deep connection with these noble animals.
Art and culture are brought to life through the Takona, body art made with natural pigments that tells ancestral stories through symbols full of meaning. The Kai Kai, The narration of legends through figures created with ropes is a fascinating Polynesian tradition that captivates young and old alike. Master craftsmen demonstrate centuries-old techniques of wood carving, flower crown making and the elaboration of traditional costumes that dress the candidates and their support groups.
Every night, the main stage at Hanga Vare Vare is illuminated with dance, music and song shows that transport the public through the Rapa Nui history. It is here where the Tapati Queen is chosen, in a ceremony that involves the entire community in an atmosphere of celebration and cultural pride.
An Authentic Cultural Experience
Tapati Rapa Nui is not only to observe, but to live. Visitors are welcome to participate in many of the activities, attend cultural workshops, enjoy local cuisine at the food fair and immerse themselves in an experience that connects the past with the present. The festival also offers handicrafts, paintings, jewelry and natural products made by local artists and brands that respect the ancestral heritage and promote sustainable tourism.
For those who are unable to travel to Rapa Nui, the festival can be followed through the Tapati Rapa Nui's official social networks, where live transmissions and daily summaries with the best photographs of each activity are offered.
