Its white sand, turquoise sea, and moai create an unmistakable landscape. But our brand’s connection to this place also invites us to look beyond what a photograph shows: the people, the knowledge, and the memories tied to it.

We've already mentioned The meaning and inspiration behind our name. This time, we explore another dimension of Anakena through the book The Art of Easter Island, by Thor Heyerdahl: the encounters the author describes during the 1955–1956 expedition and the role of those who shared some of their knowledge with him.1

Source: Heyerdahl, Thor. The Art of Easter Island: Secrets and Mysteries. C. Bertelsmann Verlag, 1975.

A landscape that can also be conveyed through words

Stories about a place help us understand its significance to those who live there. In the pages devoted to Anakena, Heyerdahl recounts that his expedition’s camp was located in a place associated, according to local tradition, with the residence of Hotu Matu’a.2 The passage documents that association as the author recorded it; on its own, it does not provide archaeological evidence of who lived there.

This distinction allows us to approach the past with respect and precision. Oral tradition transmits memory and identity. Archaeology studies material remains. Both can enrich our understanding of a place, even though they address different questions.

The people behind the research

One of the most valuable aspects of the book is that it allows readers to identify Rapanui participants by name. Heyerdahl describes how Pedro Atan organized a group to conduct demonstrations related to the work on the moai.3 It also mentions the Pakarati brothers and their construction of totora boats.4

To learn about the landmarks along the beach, you can read our article on The Ahu and Moai of Anakena. Here, we are particularly interested in another aspect: the local knowledge that made those experiences possible. In the narrative, the Rapa Nui people contribute techniques, explanations, and decisions that form part of the history of the research.

The book also mentions Victoria Atan. According to Heyerdahl, she was involved during the work to erect the statue, and her permission was essential for a family member to share information about a cave.5 These episodes are told from the author's perspective, but they show that access to certain knowledge involved family relationships and responsibilities.

Objects, Caves, and Family Memories

A significant portion of these pages deals with small sculptures, objects preserved in caves, and conversations held around the camp. Heyerdahl describes storage sites associated with families and objects to which his interlocutors attributed specific stories.6

Not all of these events took place in Anakena: the story extends to other areas of Rapa Nui. Anakena appears as a meeting place from which many of these relationships developed.

There is also a helpful note within the book itself. The author distinguishes between pieces he considered to be antique and others that were recently made, and notes that trade with the expedition spurred new production.7 That is why finding an object in a cave is not enough to determine its age.

From Anakena to Our Products: Landscape, Memory, and Care

Our choice of the name Anakena stems from a genuine connection to Rapa Nui. Petra Klimscha, founder of Anakena – Natural Cosmetics, has lived on the island for years, where the brand’s story began.8 That closeness is part of our identity and the inspiration we draw from the nature and landscapes of Polynesia.

Bearing this name also invites us to learn more about the place that inspired it—to acknowledge the people who have shared their stories, to identify the sources, and to speak of their heritage with care.

Behind the image of Anakena lies a story that deserves attention. That depth, combined with the beauty of the landscape, gives meaning to the connection we want to share through our natural cosmetics and home fragrance products: from body oils inspired by Polynesia to home fragrances that evoke the breeze, the sand, and the light of this sacred beach.

Every Anakena product seeks to capture, through textures and scents, a piece of that sense of place: respect for natural ingredients, for the rhythms of nature, and for the stories that have shaped Rapa Nui. In this way, caring for our skin and the environment also becomes a way to honor the landscape that inspires us.

Sources and Reading Notes

1. Heyerdahl, Thor: The Art of Easter Island: Secrets and Mysteries. Munich/Gütersloh/Vienna: C.
