Anakena is a bay located on the north coast of the island. According to legend, Hotu Matua, the mythical founding father of the Rapa Nui people, landed in this bay creating the first human settlement of Easter Island on its shores. Nowadays, the beach that forms the bay is known as Anakena. A few meters from the beach is the Ahu Nau Nau, a ceremonial altar with five of its very well preserved moai.
