The Monoï de Tahiti is much more than a delicately scented oil for skin and hair. Behind the little flower you see inside the golden oil lies a long South Pacific tradition.
In this article we talk especially about our Tahitian Monoï Tiare, Anakena's classic oil containing a Tiare Tahiti flower visible inside the bottle. You will discover what makes this flower so special, how it ennobles coconut oil and why Monoï de Tahiti Anakena is an authentic natural product made in Tahiti.
When you open a bottle of Monoï de Tahiti Tiaré Anakena for the first time, you notice it immediately: a small flower floats inside the golden oil. It is not a simple decorative element, but a visible sign of authenticity and quality.
This is a Tiare Tahiti flower, Gardenia tahitensis, one of the elements that make the authentic Monoï de Tahiti so special.

The Tiare Tahiti: the soul of the South Pacific
The Tiare Tahiti, Gardenia tahitensis is the national flower of French Polynesia and a symbol of Tahiti and its islands. Its white petals, arranged in the shape of a star, give off an unmistakable fragrance: soft, floral, exotic and with a character reminiscent of jasmine.
For the inhabitants of the South Pacific islands, the Tiare is much more than a flower. It is part of tradition, everyday beauty and Polynesian cultural identity.
When worn behind the ear, it follows a precise code: on the right it indicates that the heart is free; on the left, close to the heart, that the person is already engaged. As a necklace or wreath, it accompanies the welcome to those who arrive and conveys a sense of hospitality.
In the Polynesian tradition, it has also been used for generations in natural preparations, baths and care rituals. Its delicate aroma and its traditionally appreciated properties make it a flower closely linked to well-being, beauty and skin care.
How the Tiare flower arrives in coconut oil
The key to making authentic Monoï de Tahiti lies in a traditional maceration process that is carried out exclusively in French Polynesia. This process is regulated by the Decree of Appellation d'Origine of April 1, 1992.

The Tiare flowers are harvested very early in the morning, starting at about 5:00 a.m., when they are still in the bud stage, just before they fully open. They should be processed the following day at the latest, because their aromatic and natural qualities are particularly delicate.
Then, the fresh flowers are placed in refined coconut oil, also called coprah oil, following the traditional method of enfleurage. This process is done at room temperature, without adding heat.
To produce Monoï de Tahiti, at least 12 flowers per liter of oil are used for a minimum maceration of 12 days. During this time, the flowers give the oil its characteristic fragrance and care qualities.
After maceration, the oil rests for 24 hours. It is then filtered, cleaned and stabilized with a natural antioxidant, a tocopherol solution. The result is the authentic Monoï de Tahiti oil.
An important detailThe coconut oil of Monoï de Tahiti Tiare can solidify or look cloudy at temperatures below approximately 24°C. This is completely normal. Just place the bottle for a few minutes in warm, not boiling, water and the oil will become clear and liquid again.
Why Tahiti Monoï de Tahiti Tiaré contains a visible flower
In Monoï de Tahiti Tiaré Anakena, the flower inside the bottle has a special value. It makes visible the origin of the product and recalls the traditional process by which Tiare flowers are macerated in coconut oil.
The flower is not only there to embellish the bottle. It is a clear sign of the direct relationship between the oil, the Tiare Tahiti and the Polynesian tradition that gives origin to Monoï de Tahiti.
So when you see the little flower inside the golden oil, you are looking at one of the most recognizable symbols of Monoï de Tahiti Tiaré: a real flower, a traditional process and a cultural heritage that lives on in every bottle.
And what about Monoï de Tahiti with Shimmer?
In addition to our Monoï de Tahiti Tiaré, at Anakena we also have the Monoï de Tahiti - Bronzing Oil with Shine, our version with a subtle mineral sheen for the skin.
This product does not include a whole flower visible inside the bottle. This is due to its formulation and its presentation as a bronzer oil with shimmer, where the visual prominence is in the luminous effect on the skin.
However, it is important to clarify: the Monoï de Tahiti with Glitter is also made from authentic Tahitian Monoï. Its base comes from the same traditional principle: Tiare flowers macerated in coconut oil using the enfleurage process in French Polynesia.
The difference is in the final presentation. The Monoï de Tahiti Tiaré contains the visible flower inside the bottle. The Monoï de Tahiti - Bronzer Oil with Shimmer does not contain that visible whole flower, but shares the same Polynesian origin and the same traditional base of the Monoï de Tahiti.
Thus, both products are part of the same tradition, although they respond to different uses and sensory experiences: Monoï de Tahiti Tiaré as a classic oil and Monoï with Shine as a luminous oil to enhance the skin.
The Appellation d'Origine seal: a guarantee of authenticity
In the 1980s, many so-called “Monoï” products from Asia or other regions were on the market, but without real Tiare flower, without Polynesian coconut oil and without traditional processing.
This changed with the French decree of April 1, 1992, which made Monoï de Tahiti the world's first cosmetic appellation of origin.
Since then, only the product made exclusively in French Polynesia, from Tiare flowers and coconut oil, following the established traditional procedures, can be called “Monoï de Tahiti”.
This seal is printed on the back of Monoï de Tahiti Anakena bottles. It is a visible proof of origin, quality and fidelity to tradition.

Coconut oil: the white gold of Tahiti
The base of the Monoï is another treasure of the islands: the coconut oil Cocos nucifera, obtained from the dried coconuts of the coconut palm, considered the “tree of life” in Polynesian culture.
This oil is rich in fatty acids, light in texture and naturally nourishing. It is therefore an ideal base for receiving, preserving and transmitting the aromatic and caring qualities of the Tiare flower.
The Tiare Tahiti is a plant native to French Polynesia. It produces very few seeds and its permanence depends largely on the care and propagation carried out by people. It grows preferably in coral soils, blooms throughout the year and has its main flowering between September and April.
Its rarity, combined with careful and laborious harvesting, makes Tiare Tahiti a particularly valuable raw material and reinforces the importance of authentic Tahitian Monoï.
Monoï de Tahiti Anakena: Polynesian tradition in every bottle
The Monoï de Tahiti Tiaré Anakena is produced in Tahiti according to the strict standards of the Tahitian Appellation d'Origine. It is a 100% oil of natural origin, vegan, free of parabens, silicones, mineral oils and microplastics.
You can use it in many ways: as a tanning oil before sunbathing, after-sun care oil, massage oil, hair mask, bath additive or body oil after showering.
Its nourishing texture cares for the skin and its fragrance immediately transports you to the South Pacific summer. And the small flower inside the bottle remains the most visible certificate of authenticity that this natural product can have.
The Monoï de Tahiti - Bronzing Oil with Shine offers another experience in the same tradition: a luminous skin, with a subtle and elegant glow, but also based on authentic Tahitian Monoï made by macerating Tiare flowers in coconut oil.
